Cute Animal Race Story for Kids Ages 3–5 – The Slow Sloth Wins the Race

Four Friends Playing

In a bright green forest, four funny friends were playing together.

There was Ricky the Raccoon, who loved shiny things.
There was Sammy the Squirrel, who could run super fast.
There was Sally the Sloth, who moved very… very… slowly.
And there was Dino, a small, happy dinosaur with big stompy feet.

One sunny morning, Ricky shouted,
“Let’s have a race!”

“A race?!” said Sammy, already bouncing with excitement.

“I like races,” said Dino, stomping his feet happily.

Sally the Sloth blinked slowly.

“A race… sounds… nice,” she said.

Ready, Set, Go!

Ricky scratched a line in the dirt.

“This is the starting line!” he said.

He pointed to a tall tree across the clearing.

“That tree is the finish line!”

Finish Line Selected

Everyone got ready.

Sammy wiggled his tail.

Dino stomped his feet.

Ricky grinned.

Sally slowly lifted one arm.

“Ready… set… GO!” shouted Ricky.

WHOOSH!

Sammy the Squirrel zoomed ahead like a rocket.

STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!

Dino ran with big bouncy steps.

Ricky the Raccoon ran quickly too.

Meanwhile…

Sally the Sloth was still at the starting line.

“Go… Sally… go…” she said softly.

And she took one slow step.

Silly Distractions

Sammy raced up a tree.

Suddenly he saw an acorn.

“Mmm! My favorite snack!” he said.

Crunch! Crunch!

Sammy forgot all about the race.

Down on the path, Ricky spotted something shiny.

“Ooooo!” he gasped.

It was a sparkly bottle cap.

“Treasure!” said Ricky happily.

He picked it up and turned it this way and that.

He forgot all about the race too.

Nearby, Dino saw a big muddy puddle.

“SPLASH!” went Dino.

He jumped in again.

“SPLASH! SPLASH!”

Mud went everywhere.

Dino laughed and laughed.

And he forgot all about the race.

During The Race

One Slow Racer

But Sally the Sloth kept moving.

Step.

Pause.

Step.

Pause.

The birds chirped above her.

“Slow and steady,” Sally whispered.

She climbed over a little rock.

Step.

Pause.

Step.

The tall finish tree was getting closer.

Very slowly.

But closer.

The Big Surprise

After a while, Sammy finished his snack.

“Oh no!” he said. “The race!”

Ricky looked up from his shiny treasure.

“Oh no!” he said too.

Dino climbed out of the puddle.

“Mud race?” he asked.

“No!” said Sammy. “Regular race!”

The three friends ran as fast as they could.

But when they reached the tall tree…

Sally the Sloth was already there.

She gently touched the tree.

“I… made… it,” she said with a happy smile.

The Sloth Wins

The Winner

Sammy gasped.

“Sally won the race!”

Ricky laughed.

“The slowest racer won!”

Dino clapped his little dinosaur hands.

“Hooray for Sally!”

Sally smiled her slow, warm smile.

“Sometimes,” she said,

“slow… and… steady… works just right.”

The friends celebrated together.

Sammy shared acorns.

Ricky shared his shiny bottle cap.

Dino made silly muddy footprints.

And Sally the Sloth rested happily under the big tree.

Because winning is fun…

But playing with friends is the best prize of all.

The End.
