The Princess and the Pea is a delightful fairy tale about a young woman who proves her royal lineage through a clever test.

When a prince searches for a true princess, his mother, the queen, sets up a challenge involving a pea hidden beneath numerous mattresses.

This whimsical story, penned by Hans Christian Andersen, highlights themes of sensitivity and authenticity, reminding readers that true nobility lies in one’s character.

The Princess and The Pea – Let’s Read

Once, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a young prince who was searching for a true princess to marry. Although he met many princesses from different lands, he always felt that something was missing.

He wanted to find a princess who was genuine, one he could love completely.

The Young Prince

One stormy evening, there was a knock on the castle door. The king opened it to find a young woman, drenched and shivering in the rain.

She introduced herself as a princess who had been caught in the storm. Despite her dishevelled appearance, the prince was intrigued, but the queen was skeptical. Was she really a princess?

The queen decided to put her to the test. She invited the young woman to stay the night and instructed the servants to prepare a special bed for her.

First, they laid a single pea on the bed frame. Then, they stacked twenty soft mattresses on top, followed by twenty layers of the finest feather beds.

The young woman climbed into bed and attempted to sleep. However, she spent the night tossing and turning, unable to get comfortable. In the morning, the queen asked how she had slept.

The Princess Felt Uncomfortable

“Oh, terribly!” the young woman replied. “There was something so hard under the bed that I barely slept at all. I feel as if I’m bruised all over!”

The queen knew at once that this was a true princess, for only a princess with a delicate nature could feel a pea through so many layers.

Quote of the Day

True nobility lies not in wealth or title, but in the sensitivity of one’s heart, revealed even by the smallest of challenges.

The prince was delighted to have found his true princess, and soon they were married with a grand celebration.

The pea, meanwhile, was placed in the royal museum as a reminder of the night the prince found his one true love.
