The Whispering Shadows – A Creepy Scary Halloween Night – Let’s Read

The Whispering Shadows

Halloween night in Willow Creek was always a little weird.

The wind didn’t just blow—it whispered. The trees didn’t just rustle—they seemed to watch you. And this year, something felt off.

Unsettling. Like the night was waiting for something to happen.

Two kids, Lena and Jay, were out trick-or-treating, their breath fogging the chilly October air. Lena was wearing a wicked witch costume, complete with glowing green makeup.

Jay rocked a skeleton hoodie with bones that lit up in the dark. Their buckets clinked with candy, but their excitement was starting to fade into something else.

“You feel that?” Lena asked, glancing behind her.

Jay paused. “Yeah. It’s like… we’re being followed.”

They looked around. The street was empty, just rows of decorated houses, fake spiderwebs, and carved pumpkins flickering with candlelight.

But the wind had a voice, almost like it was calling their names.

“Jaaaay… Leeeena…”

They froze.

It’s just someone’s Halloween speaker or something,” Jay said quickly, trying to sound brave.

Lena pointed down the street. “Look. The greenhouse. The one at the end near the woods.”

Jay’s stomach dropped. “That’s… Old Man Morley’s place. Didn’t he go missing last Halloween?”

“Exactly,” Lena said with a smirk. “Let’s check it out.”

Jay swallowed hard but nodded. “You first.”

Into the Shadows

The greenhouse was utterly dark. Its glass panels were cracked and smeared with dirt.

Vines twisted around the structure like they were trying to strangle it. As they stepped inside, a wave of cold air hit them, not just cold, but wrong.

Like the kind of chill you get in your spine when something watches you from the dark.

The door creaked open with a screech that echoed through the night.

Inside, it was deathly quiet. Shelves of rotting plants lined the walls, their leaves dry and curling like fingers.

Cobwebs hung low, brushing against their heads. A single lantern in the centre flickered on by itself.

Jay stepped closer to it, and the vines on the wall began to move.

Lena gasped. “Did you see that?”

Before Jay could answer, a voice filled the room. Not loud, but heavy. Whispery. Old.

“So… you’ve come to play…”

They turned around and saw him.

He wasn’t a man. Not really. Not anymore.

Tall. Cloaked in dead leaves and shadows. His eyes glowed green, and moss clung to his cracked skin.

“I am Thistle, Keeper of the Shadows,” he said, his voice rustling like dry grass. “Every Halloween, I awaken. To test the brave. Or punish the foolish.”

Lena stepped back. “What do you want?”

Thistle smiled, a slow curl of his lips. “Only a game.”

The Shadow’s Challenge

With a snap of his twiggy fingers, three glowing riddles floated into the air.

“Answer them… or become one with the shadows.”

Jay’s mouth went dry. Lena grabbed his hand.

The riddles began.

Riddle 1

“I have no flesh, yet I can bite. I creep in silence, late at night. What am I?”
Lena whispered, “A chill?”
Jay shook his head. “No… it’s fear.
The riddle vanished. Correct.

Riddle 2

“I flicker but I’m not alive, I dance though I cannot move. What am I?”
“Easy,” Lena said. “A flame.”
Correct.

Riddle 3

“I come only once, but haunt you forever. What am I?”
They both hesitated.

Jay said softly, “A nightmare.”

The air shifted. The greenhouse groaned.

Then—a deep, approving laugh.

The Gift of the Shadows

Thistle clapped his hands. The vines retreated. The walls stopped creaking. The lantern glowed brighter.

“You’ve passed,” he said. “And for that… you earn a gift.”

He pulled out two black apples from beneath his cloak, glowing faintly with golden cracks.

Bite it, and Halloween will always whisper to you. You’ll remember the shadows. The truth. The thrill.”

They took the apples, and before they could blink, Thistle vanished. The greenhouse was still again—silent, cold, forgotten.

The Morning After

The next day, no one believed their story. Not their parents. Not their classmates.

But that night, a black cat showed up at Jay’s porch. Its eyes glowed green.

At Lena’s window, a single dead leaf drifted in… and whispered her name.

They never forgot.

And every Halloween after, they could still hear it…

“Jaaaay… Leeeena…”

The End… or is it? Wait for the next part, kids. We will soon share it with you.
