A Man with a Lamp – Longer Version
Long ago, a quiet village near green hills and a lush forest. There lived a man, his name was Arjun, who was blind by birth.
Despite not being able to see, Arjun was known for his cheerful nature and kind heart. Everyone in the village respected him for his positivity and unshakable spirit.
But one thing is strange about Arjun that puzzled them. Arjun always carried a lamp with him. Even it was the bright light of the day or the quiet darkness of night. Arjun never stepped outside without that lamp.
The villagers always wondered and asked each other, “Why would a blind man need a lamp?” They only just thought but never dared to ask him.
One day, a traveler passes through the village. He saw Arjun walking with his lamp. He was curious to know about it. He approached Arjun and said “Excuse me” his voice was polite, “I don’t mean to intrude, but why do you carry a lamp when you cannot see?”
Arjun paused, a warm smile spreading across his face. “This lamp,” he said gently, “is not for me. It’s for others. This lamp helps people see me in the dark so they don’t accidentally bump into me. It also brightens their path, and makes their journey easier and safer.”
The traveler was amazed by Arjun’s answer. In his social circle, everyone cares about themselves, not for anyone else. He surprisingly said, “That’s incredibly thoughtful,”
The traveler was amazed by Arjun’s answer. “That’s incredibly thoughtful, But doesn’t it make you sad that you bring light to others while living in darkness yourself?”
After listening to this Arjun’s smile grew brighter. “Not at all,” he replied. “Helping others makes me happy. Even though I can’t see the light of this lamp. I know it’s making a difference for those around me.” He stopped to talk and then continued, “It gives my life a purpose and it makes me feel connected to the world.”
The traveler was deeply inspired by Arjun’s words and he decided to walk alongside him, hoping to learn more.
As they started walking together, dark clouds began to cover the sky. Soon, a fierce storm erupted. The wind howled, and heavy rain started. The path became slippery and treacherous.
The traveler felt stuck there, he was unfamiliar with the area. He grew frightened and felt completely lost in the pitch-black night.
Arjun felt the traveler’s fear, so he stopped and held his lamp high, “Don’t worry,” he said calmly. “Stay close to me. I may not see with my eyes, but I know this path like the back of my hand. Trust me, and we will get through this safely together.”
The traveller hesitated for a moment but then he decided to trust Arjun. Step by step, they moved carefully through the storm.
Arjun’s steady guidance and calm demeanor reassured the traveler. This attitude gives him the strength to keep going.
After some time, they reached a large tree that provided shelter from the storm. They sat beneath its branches, listening to the rain ease and the wind die down.
After hours, the storm finally passed, and the traveler turned to Arjun with gratitude shining in his eyes.
“Now I truly understand,” he said softly.
“Your lamp is more than just a source of light. It is the symbol of hope, kindness, and connection.” he continued and said, “Even though you cannot see, you lead others through their darkness. You have taught me that true vision comes from the heart, not the eyes.
Arjun nodded, his smile was gentle and wise. He said, “When we help others, we don’t just brighten their path, we also bring light into our lives. Kindness creates a world filled with understanding and compassion.”
The traveler learned a unique life lesson from Arjun. He thanked Arjun sincerely and promised to share this inspiring lesson with others.
