The Water Spirit of the Mill-Pond – Let’s Read

Long ago, a poor miller lived in a small village. His mill was by a pond deep in the woods, and he worked day and night, but he never earned much.

One day, when he was feeling desperate, he sat by the pond, watching the water. Suddenly, a beautiful spirit rose up from the water.

She was the Nixie, a magical creature who lived in the pond, with hair that flowed like water and eyes as bright as stars.

Nixie The Water Spirit

The Nixie spoke to the miller in a soft voice, offering him a deal.

She said, “I will make you rich and give you all the luck you need. But in return, you must give me whatever has just been born at your home.”

The miller, thinking this was just a new animal in his barn, quickly agreed. With that, the Nixie disappeared into the water, and the miller returned home.

But when he arrived, he was stunned.

His wife had just given birth to a son.

More Fairy Tales

Realizing what he had done, the miller felt terrified. He loved his child dearly and promised himself he would never let his son go near the pond, hoping the Nixie would forget.

Years passed, and the miller became wealthy, just as the Nixie had promised.

His son grew into a strong, kind young man, and he met and fell in love with a young woman from the village. They became engaged, dreaming of a happy life together.

One warm day, the young man wandered near the pond.

As he looked at the clear, calm water, he felt an odd pull. Then, the Nixie appeared, and before he could shout, she grabbed him and dragged him down into the pond.

Young Women Holding Golden Comb

Days passed, and the young woman searched everywhere, but no one could tell her what had happened. Refusing to give up, she went into the deep forest to find a wise old woman.

This woman listened to her story and knew what to do.

She gave the young woman three golden items: a comb, a spinning wheel, and a flute. “Go to the pond,” she told her. “When the Nixie appears, offer her each of these.

They have magic to distract her.”

The young woman went to the pond and called out to the Nixie. The water spirit appeared, curious about the young woman’s bravery.

Quote of the Day

True love dives into the deepest waters and faces the darkest spirits, emerging stronger than any magic.

First, the young woman offered the Nixie the golden comb.

The Nixie was fascinated and began to comb her long, silky hair. While the Nixie was busy, the young woman called to her fiancé.

He heard her and tried to reach her, but just as he neared the surface, the Nixie noticed and pulled him back under.

The next day, the young woman returned, offering the golden spinning wheel.

The Nixie’s eyes lit up, and she began to spin golden thread, enchanted by its gleam. The young woman called out to her fiancé again, and he rose higher in the water.

But once more, the Nixie broke free from the spell in time to pull him down again.

On the third day, the young woman played the golden flute by the pond.

The music floated over the water like a dream, and the Nixie, charmed by the tune, became lost in the melody.

Young Women Rescue Her Fiancé

This time, the young man broke free completely, reaching the shore and grabbing his fiancée’s hand.

The two of them ran away from the pond, never looking back. The Nixie’s cries faded behind them as they escaped.

Safe at last, they hugged each other, grateful to be together again.

From that day on, they lived happily, never returning to the mill-pond.

And though the Nixie still waits by the water’s edge, she never saw them again.
