The Wolf and the Stork” is a classic fable that teaches an important lesson about kindness, trust, and gratitude.

The story follows a greedy wolf who gets a bone stuck in his throat while eating hurriedly. In pain, he begs other animals for help, but they refuse because of his cunning nature.

Finally, a kind stork agrees to help in exchange for a reward. However, once the stork removes the bone, the ungrateful wolf refuses to keep his promise and mocks her instead.

This story highlights the importance of being careful about whom we trust and reminds us that helping the ungrateful often leads to disappointment.

It is a great tale for children to learn the value of honesty, gratitude, and keeping promises.

The Wolf and the Stork – Let’s Read

Once upon a time, in a dense and beautiful forest, there lived a cunning wolf. He was strong and clever, but he was also very greedy.

He always thought about himself and never cared for others.

The wolf loved to trick the other animals to get what he wanted. Sometimes, he would pretend to be kind and friendly, but deep down, he only cared about his own benefit.

He would make false promises and deceive smaller animals into giving him food. If he ever helped someone, it was only because he expected something in return.

Because of his selfish and cunning nature, most animals in the forest did not trust him. They stayed away from him, knowing he could not be relied upon.

But the wolf didn’t care—he only wanted to satisfy his hunger and greed, no matter what it took.

The Wolf’s Feast

Cunning Wolf Eating Meat

One bright morning, the wolf woke up feeling extremely hungry. His stomach growled, and he knew he had to find food quickly.

He wandered through the forest, sniffing around for something to eat. After a long search, he finally spotted a fat animal in the bushes.

Without wasting a moment, he pounced on it with his sharp claws and caught his meal.

The wolf was overjoyed! His mouth watered as he looked at the large piece of meat.

But instead of eating slowly and carefully, he became greedy. He tore into the flesh, biting off huge chunks without chewing properly.

His sharp teeth crunched through bones, but he didn’t care—he just wanted to fill his belly as fast as possible.

Then, suddenly, something terrible happened. A sharp bone got stuck in his throat! The wolf froze in shock. He tried to swallow, but the bone wouldn’t move.

He coughed, gagged, and tried to shake his head, but nothing helped.

The pain in his throat was unbearable. He gasped for air, his eyes widened in fear, and he started pacing back and forth.

Panic set in. What if he couldn’t get the bone out? What if he choked to death? He tried to scrape his throat with his paw, but it was useless.

The mighty wolf, who always felt strong, now felt weak and helpless.

For the first time, he realized he needed help. But there was a problem—he had tricked and betrayed so many animals in the past. Would anyone be willing to help him now?

Seeking Help

The wolf was in terrible pain. The sharp bone stuck in his throat made it hard for him to breathe, and every time he tried to swallow, it hurt even more.

He knew he couldn’t remove it alone—he needed help.

He started looking for other animals in the forest. First, he saw a rabbit nibbling on some grass. “Rabbit, please help me!” the wolf groaned. “A bone is stuck in my throat. I am in great pain!”

But the rabbit was too scared. He remembered how the wolf had once tricked his friends and eaten them. “I… I can’t help you!” the rabbit stammered and quickly ran away.

The wolf then spotted a deer drinking water by the river. “Deer, please help me! You have to do something!” he begged.

The deer took a step back, shaking his head. “Why should I help you, Wolf? You have always been selfish and cruel. Now you are suffering because of your own greed!” With that, the deer turned and walked away.

The wolf grew desperate. He went from one animal to another, pleading for help. But no one trusted him. They all feared that once he got better, he would turn on them.

Finally, the wolf spotted a stork standing near the river. The stork had a long, thin beak, which the wolf realized could reach deep into his throat.

Gathering his strength, he walked up to the stork and said in a weak voice, “Stork, please… I need your help. A bone is stuck in my throat, and I cannot get it out. You have a long beak—you can save me!

The stork looked at the wolf carefully. She knew he was cunning and could not be trusted easily. “Why should I help you, Wolf? What if you harm me later?” she asked.

The wolf shook his head quickly. “No, no! I promise I won’t hurt you. If you save me, I will reward you,” he pleaded.

The stork thought for a moment. She felt sorry for the wolf, and after all, helping others was the right thing to do. “Alright,” she said. “I will help you. But remember your promise.”

The wolf nodded eagerly, hoping to get rid of his pain finally.

The Stork’s Kindness

Stork Helping Wolf

The stork looked at the wolf, who was groaning in pain. She felt sorry for him but knew he was not to be trusted. So, before helping, she said, “I will remove the bone, but only if you promise to reward me for my help.”

The wolf, desperate to get rid of the pain, quickly agreed. “Yes, yes! I promise to reward you. Just take this bone out of my throat!” he begged.

The stork nodded and carefully stepped closer.

She stretched her long, thin beak and slowly put it inside the wolf’s mouth. The wolf had to stay very still—one wrong move and the stork could get hurt.

The stork looked carefully and spotted the sharp bone stuck deep inside the wolf’s throat. She gently grabbed it with her beak and, with a swift movement, pulled it out!

The wolf coughed a little, then took a deep breath. The pain was gone! He was finally free from his suffering.

The stork stepped back and smiled. “There you go, Wolf. I have helped you. Now, please give me my reward,” she said.

But the wolf only gave a sly grin.

The Wolf’s Betrayal

As soon as the bone was out, the wolf took a deep breath and felt completely relieved. The terrible pain was gone, and he could swallow again without any trouble.

He stretched his neck and grinned.

The stork stepped forward and politely said, “Wolf, I have helped you. Now, please give me the reward you promised.”

But instead of thanking her, the wolf burst into laughter. “Reward? Hah! You should be grateful that I didn’t eat you instead!” he said arrogantly.

The stork was shocked. “But you promised!” she protested.

The wolf smirked and said, “Foolish bird! You put your head inside a wolf’s mouth and lived to tell the tale. That is your reward! Now go away before I change my mind!”

The stork realized she had been tricked. The greedy wolf had no gratitude or kindness in his heart. Feeling disappointed but wiser, she spread her wings and flew away, vowing never to trust a cunning animal again.

Moral of the Story

  • Kindness should be given to those who deserve it. Not everyone values or appreciates kindness. We should be careful about whom we trust and help.
  • Helping the ungrateful brings no reward. Just like the stork helped the wolf but got nothing in return, helping selfish or dishonest people may only lead to disappointment.

What Kids Learn from This Story

  • Be Kind, But Be Wise – Helping others is a good thing, but we should also be careful about whom we trust. Not everyone appreciates kindness.
  • Keep Your Promises – Just like the wolf broke his promise to the stork, people who don’t keep their word lose trust and respect. It’s important to be honest and do what we say.
  • Selfishness Brings No Friends – The wolf was greedy and ungrateful, so no one wanted to help him at first. If we are selfish, we may end up alone when we need help.
  • Gratitude is Important – Saying “thank you” and appreciating help from others makes us good and kind people.
